Raising two girls, the subject of a ‘soapbox derby’ car never came into any of our conversations.
But after watching the inspirational film 25 Hill, I started to think that this would have been a lot of fun to be a part of.
25 Hill tells the story of 12 year-old Trey Caldwell (played by Nathan Gamble from Dolphin Tale) whose life is shattered when his soldier father is killed in Afghanistan, leaving a hole in the boys life – and an unfinished soap box derby car.The car was a gift from his dad right before he was deployed. It’s a constant reminder to him of all that could have been.
Than Trey meets Ray Gibbs (played by Corbin Bernsen from L.A. Law), a grumpy fire chief who has been devastated by the loss of his son on 9/11, and an unlikely bond is formed the All American Soap Box Derby.
The two not only find a way to become friends and soap box derby champs, but they also find the courage to move on and the faith that carries them.
I truly enjoyed watching this movie and highly suggest checking it out for your own family. The DVD also has some really interesting extras like the history of the All American Soapbox Derby and behind the scenes information from actor and director Corbin Bernsen.
It’s available at Wal-Mart stores around the country. Check it out.
