Would you believe me if I told you that I think you can get in the best shape of your life from the comfort of your very own home? You don’t need a monthly gym membership or expensive equipment that never get’s used. All you need is a little imagination, a desire to change, and maybe a cute outfit or two.
With these starter ingredients, and possibly a few other products, I’m going to show you how you can have fun exercising from home and get in the best shape of your life.
First, Let’s Change Our Mindset
Before I get into the list of fun exercising ideas I want to encourage you to get rid of the excuses.
You know the ones…
- I don’t have time…
- I don’t know where to start…
- I’m too tired…
- I tried before and it didn’t work…
- and so on and so on and so on…
If you are sitting and reading this blog post, then I know you want something to change, so let’s stop the excuses and change our mindset.
My Excuse and How I Changed My Mindset
I used the excuse that I ate really healthy and walked a lot. That should be enough right? Nope. Especially after I crested over the wonderful hill of 40, my body started to tell me that I needed to do more. It wasn’t that I was horribly out of shape, I just didn’t have the energy or stamina I used to have.
Exercising to me was not fun. I didn’t wake up in the morning thinking, Yeh, I get to workout. No, I would think about it.. for like a hot minute, then I would move on to something else. Like my coffee and work.
It wasn’t until about two months ago that I decided that I had to change my mindset. If I kept laughing and cracking jokes about how I ‘didn’t enjoy working out‘ then I was NEVER going to get in shape. I was never going to see a difference in how I looked or felt if I didn’t change my mindset.
Making the Choice
As I’ve shared before, living a healthier lifestyle has to start with a choice.
It’s not always the easiest choice and sticking to it can be hard, but I can honestly say that I am seeing positive results of that choice. Not only in how I look, but in how I feel. I have more energy, I’m sleeping better, and I just all around feel pretty darn awesome.
Change Your Mindset, But Make It Fun
Exercising for me in the past has been really boring and/or expensive.
- Joined a gym, went a few times, got bored, stopped going.
- Bought a treadmill, walked a few times, got bored, stopped using it.
- Purchased one particular workout DVD, did it a few times, got bored, stop doing it.
The list goes on and on.
Not this time around though. With this new mindset, I was bound and determined to find different ways to have fun exercising. With a little research and some small investments in ‘equipment’, I have been able to come up with a few different ways to actual ENJOY exercising.
#1 – My Favorite, So Far, Beachbody on Demand
NO! I am NOT a Beachbody coach and I’m not looking to become one either (so please don’t email me about becoming part of your team). I just love this program.
Having access to multiple types of workouts is fantastic. Whether I want to work through a whole program like the 21 Day Fix that I just did or have fun with some of the dance workouts, it’s right there on my TV through my Roku!
Price – $99 for a year’s access (soo much cheaper than a gym!)
How it works – with BBOD you have access to all their workout programs via your laptop, TV (through a streaming device), and even your phone.
You pick which program you want to do and when you want to do it.
The workouts I’ve done are easy to follow, are a lot of fun, and even have modifications if you can’t do exactly what they are doing (and I use those quite often).
Yes, it costs some money. But for $99 I can have access anywhere and to more than one program. I LOVE it!
Affiliate Link Info: the BeachBody on Demand links I have included are connected with a dear friend of mine that is a coach. She won’t bother you with any emails or anything unless you reach out to her. I just wanted to share some love ‘small business’ love and include her link here. You are not obligated to use this link in any way, but if you do, she greatly appreciates it.
#2 Dance While You Clean and Cook
This one is a pretty much a freebie and can be done with friends and family if you want.
Dancing can be one of the best forms of exercising for your body for many reasons.
I just love to dance.
It makes cleaning the house more enjoyable and cooking, well, I personally think any meal tastes better when there’s been some dancing done in the kitchen!
Price – I invested in a good Bluetooth speaker. This lets me connect it to my laptop where I can stream music from my iTunes, Pandora, and any other music program.
#3 Be A Kid Again – Grab a Hoola Hoop
OK. I am not kidding here. Hoola hooping is some serious exercise and it can induce great bouts of laughter too.
Hoola hopping can help build core muscles, balance, and can even help you fight depression. I mean who wouldn’t love that right?
There are actual Hoola hopping workout videos that you can watch or you can just hoola your hoop during commercial breaks while watching your favorite TV show.
Price – cost of Hoola Hoop ( from $19 and up)- I would suggest getting an adult size Hula hoop so you will get the best results.
#4 Get Your Coffee To Go
This isn’t an in-home way to workout, but it’s a great suggestion none the less.
I LOVE my coffee. And I also LOVE meeting friends for coffee. So what I’ve started to do is getting my coffee to go.
What this means is that I either walk to the coffee shop, pick up a cup to go, and walk back, or I suggest to my friend to grab their cup of coffee to go and meet me at a park that has a nice walking path.
This way you can have some time outdoors, catch up with a friend, and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee (or ice coffee).
Price – a cup of coffee
#5 Play Some Video Games
A few years back, when the Wii System first came out, I had won one from a contest I entered. I personally thought it was going to be joke, but once we got it and hooked it up, I found out that it actually worked.
Now I know this is an old system, but I’m telling you, it can be A LOT of fun.
From bowling to dancing (yes, dancing again.. I love to dance), to boxing, and so much more, the Wii System still has some game left in it.
There are also other games systems that are more up to date like the Xbox Kinect that have exercise programs too.
As a matter of fact, we have recently dusted off our Wii System and hooked it back up. My family loves a good bowling match and the tennis games can quite competitive too.
Xbox – a bit pricier, but has a lot of great features
#6 Youtube Videos
Who doesn’t love a FREE way to workout?
#7 The Kids Got It Right – Play Kids Games
Jump Rope – jumping rope can build your agility and balance. It can also burn off calories and promote brain health!
Balance Ball (Exercise Ball) – I recently purchased one of these large exercise balls to sit on while I’m going office work and watching TV. I was having issues with my lower back and I knew I had to increase my core strength. Exercise balls are great for this.
You can also use them to help with your regular workouts if getting up and down on the floor is difficult.
There are a lot of exercise ball Youtube videos available too that can help you stay motivated.
Just Have Fun
This is just a beginning list of fun exercising ideas. If you take the time to sit and think about what you really enjoy doing, or maybe what you used to love doing as a kid, you may be able to come up with your own list.
All in all, just changing your mindset about exercising and looking at it as something fun to do may just be what you need to kick-start a regular exercising routine for you.
I know it’s what worked for me.
Thanks for stopping by and Happy Exercising!
