Today I had one of those totally unexpected moments where I was caught off guard with something truly wonderful.
I received an email from a media company that I have worked for in the past, inviting me to preview a new show that would be airing on A&E next week. I was immediately interested because the back story involved dogs and helping our military veterans.
DOGS OF WAR spotlights combat veteran Jim Stanek, who returns home struggling with PTSD. He looks into getting a service dog to help him heal, only to discover how expensive they are, and how long the wait to be paired with one is. So he starts his own nonprofit to rescue dogs from kill shelters, train them as service dogs and partner them with struggling veterans at little or no cost.
To be honest, I thought I would watch a few minutes of the show, than get back to some of the chores I had to do today, but after about only 5 minutes of watching the first episode of Dogs of War, I couldn’t turn it off.
WOW! Now a days its seems like every reality show is based on gossip, sexual issues, or just plan ole junk, but not this show.
Dogs of War puts the spotlight, so to speak, on people who are the true heroes of our country. The men and women who have fought for our freedoms in other countries only to return home to have to fight their own battle of PTSD.
Seeing the difference the gift of a dog makes was so moving. I love dogs, but to see how well they connect with the veterans and how they can immediately calm them down when they are having trouble, well.. it was just incredible.
