The Government Is Taking Away Your Right To Know What’s In Your Food
I don’t stand up on a soap box often here on my blog, but lately, with all that has been going on in our world, I just felt it time that I voiced my thoughts on this one topic.
My writing for The Not So Perfect Housewife has slowly been morphing into a more Health and Wellness focus over the past year or so and I enjoy sharing about living a healthy lifestyle, which incorporates so many different areas from spiritual wellness to eating healthy foods.
The area of healthy foods is what I’m getting my soap box out for today.
I’m frustrated by our government (for this reason and many others) and I’m also frustrated that so many people are just uninformed about this or don’t care.
This is the food you are taking into your body and putting into the bodies of those you love…
Why wouldn’t you want to know what’s in it?
US House Approves Ban on States Requiring GMO Labeling on Food
Yesterday the US House passed a measure backed by corporate food interests to block states from requiring the labeling of genetically modified foods that would nullify GMO labeling laws in Vermont, Connecticut and Maine.
What does that mean? It means a majority of our representatives (rather food corps & Monsanto reps at this point), took away our rights to know what’s in our food.
Representatives Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) and G. K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) have introduced federal legislation developed by food companies that we in the consumer rights community have dubbed the “Deny Americans the Right-to-Know” Act (DARK Act). This anti-GMO labeling bill has just passed the House Agriculture Committee and will be voted on by the House of Representatives any day now.
The “Denying Americans the Right-to-Know” (DARK) Act would:
- Preempt states from requiring labeling of GMO food.
- Virtually eliminate FDA’s ability to craft a national GMO labeling system.
- Codify the current, broken voluntary labeling system.
- Create a GMO “safety” review system based on industry science.
- Allow “natural” foods to contain GMO ingredients.
So, basically, if this passes through the US Senate the same way, we as Americans will find it harder to know what is in the food we are eating and the food we are feeding to our children.
Did you get that?
I mean really.. Did you hear that?
Companies will no longer be required to tell you if you are eating genetically modified food!
I could go on and on and on about why this is a bad thing, but what I really want to do is encourage you to get informed and get involved.
Don’t let the government tell you what’s healthy and what’s not. Don’t let them tell you that there are studies out there that show GMO’s are good for us and our country because those studies are bought and tested by the companies that create the GMO’s.
Don’t Just Believe Me
Start researching about GMO’s for yourself.
Here are some links to some great sites, videos, and information that will help you be informed and will hopefully will encourage you to get involved also.
Yes, these are all one sided and you are free to investigate the other sides views too. I’ve read their stuff and watched their videos, I just don’t buy into the fact that a poison company has my best interest at heart.
What Else Can You Do?
Beyond watching and reading about GMO’s, one other way you can make a difference is with your pocketbook.
- Buy organic
- Support local farmers that don’t use GMO seeds – and don’t be afraid to ask. I have met some really great farmers who are more than happy to tell you that they don’t use GMO’s.
- Buy products from companies that DO label their food. The more we buy, the more companies will see that we care and we will support them.
We can make a difference. So let’s do it!
