Have you ever read a story about someone who had every opportunity available to them to get out of a bad situation, but for some reason or another they just didn’t do it?
The solution to what kept them imprisoned in life is evident to you the reader, but for the person that lived through it, they just couldn’t see their way out. They were so wrapped up in the struggle and the negativity, that they had given up up all hope of ever breaking free.
This is how I feel sometimes when I read or talk to people about diets.
Animals Are Better At This Then We Are
Take a drive through the country with me.
Come on, jump in the passenger seat and ride along as I drive us through farm lands and wooded parks.
Now take a look around. Notice how the cows and horses are quietly grazing along. See how the birds swoop down and grab the insects or worms to take back to their nest.
Each of these animals, and all the rest God created, knows exactly what they need to live. As long as there is no human interference, these animals know what they can and can not eat. They also seem to know when enough is enough.
Now, before you click away, hear me out. I am NOT comparing us, human beings, with animals. I am however trying to get your attention and to possibly get you to look at things differently.
No one had to tell these animals what was right and wrong for them to eat. They were created in such a way, that they knew.
I believe we can live life in the same way. No, I don’t mean we need to eat bugs and grass. I mean that if we step back, stop letting people tell us which way is the ‘right’ way to eat, and focus on specific areas of our life rather then food… we can find the ‘healthy’ we are all looking for.
Detox From Dieting
Do you ever just feel overwhelmed by all the diet options that are out there? Paleo, Keto, Vegan, Clean Eating, Calorie Counting, and so many others.
Every day it seems like there is some new survey or research that tells us that ‘this’ way is the best way for us to eat. Yet, in a nation that has access to just about every means of knowledge and education, we just can’t seem to get healthy. As a whole, we are a struggling society that is fixated on what we eat.
But what if we stopped focusing on what we eat and focus on the areas of our life that effect what we eat?
Let’s do a detox from dieting. No more plans or strategies. Let’s just look in and around ourselves at the following areas of our lives and see if we can stop the food dieting and just get healthy.
Go Beyond Dieting! Go For Getting Healthy!
Change What You Focus On
Food needs to be looked at as being secondary to what is actually going on in our lives.
Focusing on these areas of our lives first and foremost may be the answer to why we struggle with dieting.
Think about it. When one or more of these areas of our lives is out of balance, what is the one thing we go to? For most of us it’s food.
A bad break-up or argument in relationship – give me dessert
Stress at work – give me salty foods
Don’t know why you are here on earth or what’s your purpose – give me pasta
Too tired from all the above or just lack the will to move/exercise – give me anything to eat
Life isn’t easy. We can’t avoid trials or stress. Yet, we can find a way to get away from the thinking that changing what we eat will solve our problems. We can learn new ways to be healthy by looking at our circumstances.
It Won’t Happen Over Night, But It Will Happen
When I talk to people about where or how to start on their health journey’s, I encourage them to start with one step. One step will lead to another and another and another. Finally ending in the place where you find your version of healthy.
Trying to tackle it all in one huge step will most likely lead to frustration. It can be done, but just start with one step.
First Step – Ask Yourself Some Questions
One good way to evaluate where you can take your first step is to look back on your life and ask yourself some questions.
Depending on how old you are, you may have a lot of history to look back on or just a little. The amount of history doesn’t really matter though. What you are looking for is just to start evaluating some things.
Now I could give you a long list of questions, but for the sake of not turning this into a book, I’ll just give you a few for today. Write them down, start a journal, create a place where you can keep track of your new health journey.
- What are your main health concerns at this time?
- Looking back, is there a time in your life when you felt really great? When you felt your best?
- When was that?
- What were you eating and doing at that time
- What is the status of relationships in your life?
- Are you happy with the way things are going?
- Is there anything you would change in these relationships?
- How is your sleep?
- How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
- Do you wake up at night?
- What kind of activity do you do on a normal basis?
- If none, what’s one thing you could do to start moving?
Now, after you finish taking some time to go over these questions, take a moment to just sit and look over your answers. Is there an area in your life that you can see needs a bit more attention?
You Can Do It.. Just Take The First Step
Like I said earlier, I could have asked a lot more questions, but for now I just want to focus on taking just one step.
Detoxing from the diet mentality and learning to see healthy in a different way is a process. Don’t rush it. Changing ones outlook on what being healthy is really all about – beyond the food – is what is most important.
Stay Tuned For More
My passion is healthy living. I LOVE to talk and share with others about all things healthy. I also love to see people break free from the chains of diets. Seeing them focus on overall health and seeing food as a secondary part of their life is something that brings joy to my life.
Over the next few months I will be posting more about ways that you can…
Go Beyond Dieting and Go For Getting Healthy!
I hope you’ll be back, and most of all, I hope you’ll leave me a comment or two and let me know what you think about this post. Also, let me know where you are on your healthy journey.. I love to hear about it.
