Over the past few years I’ve been blessed to be able to travel quite a bit. It’s been a lot of fun going to new places and finding delicious foods to try, but I’ve had to learn what it takes to travel and stay healthy.
Time changes, sleeping in different places, and eating foods you normally don’t eat can quickly wreak havoc on your body. If you’re not prepared, all your amazing plans for fun and adventure can turn into long stays in a hotel room trying to feel better.
That’s why I’ve started planning ahead. I make sure I have just the right products to take with me that will help offset any unhealthy obstacles that may come my way.
Be Ready To Move
OK. Now don’t let that heading fool you. I am not the kind of person who gets up at the crack of dawn while traveling to run a few miles or hit the hotel gym. High five to those who do. No, I lean more towards enjoying a morning cup of coffee and than getting out to explore my new surroundings. Whether that’s hiking or just walking around town, having good walking shoes is a must.
Tennis shoes may not be the most fashionable thing to wear though, so that’s why I like to find some cool t-shirts to keep it fun. For an upcoming trip, I picked some shirts (like those above) that kind of go along with my trip. The ‘ready to road-trip‘ t-shirt is for the adventurer inside me. The ‘Kale Yeah‘ t-shirt is for the veggie foodie side. Not only do they look cute, but they can also be great conversation starters.

Pack to Snack
What is it about going to the airport or actually flying in airplane that makes a person hungry? I try to eat something before I head out, but for some reason I always seem to have a snack attack as soon as I walk into the terminals. It took about one bad food trip to make realize I need to plan ahead.
Being stuck waiting an hour or so for a plane and really having no healthy options around is not fun. Sugary smoothie joints and prepackaged salads were not what I wanted. Once you get on the plane too, it doesn’t get any better. I’m not a big fan of the on-flight snack options, so packing snacks at home is my solution.
My go-to snacks range from trail mix to race cakes and nut butters. Depending on where I’m going and how long the trip will be, I either pack a lot or just little. As long as I don’t bring any liquids, getting them through security has never been a problem. I’ve even found some great little snap lid containers that keep any of my snacks from getting smooched or broken apart.
Keep Your Body In Working Order
My biggest struggle with staying healthy while traveling is finding food that I can eat. Being mostly a plant-based, lactose intolerant gal limits me quite a bit. It’s not always possible to have everything I can eat available to me, so having the right products waiting for me back at the hotel room is a must.
OK friends, these things are the bomb diggity of acid reflux or heartburn remedies. My little papaya tablets are never far from my side. I have baggies of these things everywhere. In the car, in my purse, and all over my house. These natural enzyme, acid fighting life savers are a must for an healthy travels. Papaya fruit has an enzyme called papain that seems to help aid in digestion. It helps break down meat and other proteins in our bodies, somewhat like the enzyme pepsin does that we already have in us. I could go on and on about these wonder tablets, but for the sake of not wanting to bore you, I’ll stop. Just know.. these are a must for me.
This is almost a given. If you struggle with any kind of gut related issues or just enjoy taking care of your body, most likely you have heard about probiotics or take them on a regular basis. I make sure that these are on my grocery list when we get to where we are going. Yes, I go grocery shopping when traveling.. it’s a must. I prefer to have probiotics that are kept cold, and that’s hard to do on a plane, so it’s always easier to just pick some up when we get to where we are going. Probiotics help keep your gut healthy, even when you are introducing new and interesting foods.
No, this isn’t just a state of mind. Natural Vitality’s CALM powder packs are what helps me sleep on the road. No matter how comfortable (or not so comfortable) the hotel bed it, I still tend to be restless at nights. I guess it’s just knowing that I’m not at home in my own bed that just makes it hard. That was until I came across CALM at last years Shift-Con Conference. It was there that I started giving these magnesium supplements a try and I quickly became hooked on them. No crazy ingredients, not funky flavorings, just a magnesium based powder that you can add to water that will help you sleep, and if need be, keep your system moving (if you know what I mean). I also pack multi-vitamins for just a daily vitamin boost. Turmeric for any headaches or aches and pain that arise. And some peppermint essential oil rollers for a quick decongestant or headache fighter. All of these are my little natural medicine cabinet on the go.
