Have you ever looked at the back of a processed dressing mix packet or seasoning packet? Ugh, they are filled with all kinds of unhealthy ingredients that are only in there so that it will keep on the shelf for months at a time. Who wants that? Well, that’s why I LOVE making my own seasoning and dressing mixes. Recipes like this homemade Italian dressing mix are super easy to make and can be used to make just about any dish pop with flavor.
Making homemade seasonings like this is a lot easier than you may think. With just a few ingredients (not the numerous ones like on the package) you can have delicious, homemade dressings mixed up in no time.
Buying In Bulk Makes It Easier and Cheaper
The first thing you’ll need to do is take inventory of what kind of spices you have on hand. Most homemade salad dressing mixes don’t use extravagant ingredients, so your basic spices will be just fine.
Using what you have on hand is a great idea, but if you like this recipe (which I think you will). buying some extra spices in bulk may be something you want to look in to.
Buying spices in bulk will allow you to not only save quite a bit of money, but it makes it much easier to quickly make these recipes. Having the spices on hand (I keep mine in the freezer) keeps you from running out and buying the processed mixes when needed.
Where To Buy Them
I am part of a co-op that orders pantry items like this in bulk, but sometimes that is not always convenient, so my go-to place is Amazon.
Amazon has good prices on 1 pound bags of organic spices like Oregano, Basil, Garlic Powder, and so much more. It’s a little pricey up front, but as you can see below, in the long run, you are saving quite a bit of money per ounce and they will last you a long time.

- Category: Dressings
For Dry Mix
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder

For Dry Mix
To make a bulk/large amount to keep on hand, I usually double/triple/quadruple the recipe
- Place all the dry ingredients in a small processor and pulse just a few times to blend the mixture
- Keep in an air-tight container with spices
- Add dry ingredients to a dressing bottle or glass jar.
- Slowly add in wet ingredients.
- Cover and shake dressing until well blended.
- Shake before each use
