A few months back, the hubster and I decided to take a long weekend at Disney World to celebrate a combination of things.
My birthday, his birthday, our anniversary, and Mother’s Day.
It was on this trip that I had my first REAL experience with a special diet request in a ‘dine in’ restaurant. Most of the time we are at Disney, we choose counter service, so this was all new to me.
I had made reservations online via My Disney Experience (which by the way is VERY cool to use) for the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater and was able to put that I had a dairy allergy.
So when we arrived and were seated in our ‘car’, the waitress quickly verified that there was an allergy and asked exactly what it was.
Ok, now here is where I’m going to be totally honest and share a very silly part to this story…
You see, sometimes it’s just easier to say I’m Vegan than to say that I’m lactose intolerant and prefer not to eat meat. But where I hit a snag with this is if I say I’m Vegan, than I have to say, ‘but I eat fish’…
Ugh, bless his heart, can you feel my husbands pain.
He just shakes his head and laughs.
So I tell the waitress that I’m basically vegan…
WELL.. I didn’t know that this changes things. This means that the Disney Chef does not have to come out and that she can recite to me what vegan options they have.
‘Oh but wait.. did I tell you I prefer gluten free too? Sorry, forgot to mention that’
Can you feel the tension coming from the waitress?
Poor thing (though she didn’t hide her annoyance well)..
Sooo, to make a a long story short..
The chef ended up coming out and discussing with me what I could and could not eat. He was great! He actually got a big smile and said.. ‘Let’s do this, I’m going to make you a nice grilled Salmon, with some sautéed vegetables and a couscous. All of this would be made without any type of dairy, i.e. butter.
YES, the couscous had gluten in it, but I was ok with that, I love couscous and it doesn’t seem to bother me that much.
So after a few moments, the waitress brought out our food. Now the hubster had chosen the Rueben sandwich and was totally happy about it, but when he saw my dish… well.. he was actually a little jealous. I mean come on.. even beyond my bad photography ( you try taking a picture in a dark restaurant with just your i-phone) this dish looked and tasted AMAZING!
So , needless to say, I still have learning to do when it comes to ordering special diet food while at Disney. But, in general it was a great dinner, the chef was awesome, and my date.. well, he was pretty amazing too.
The conversation on our way out of the restaurant..
Me: “Oh you know what, I forgot to ask them if the items were organic and if the salmon was wild harvest..”
The hubster: .. just shakes his head, laughs, puts his arm around me and says..
“ I love you.. my High Maintenance Eater”
Oh wait.. before you go!
I also wanted to share that I recently became a member of the Blogger Stream Team for Celebrate Awareness!! I’ll be sharing posts and information about that upcoming Food Allergy & Celiac Convention that’s being held at Walt Disney World Coronado Springs Resort on November 22nd of this year! I’m so excited! Check out their web site for more information and join us if you can.
