Our dogs are like family to us.
They are the ones that greet us at the door when we come home. They are always happy to see us and are right there when we need a shoulder (or a paw) to cry on.
So just as we take care of our family by providing healthy foods and vitamins, we should be doing the same for our four legged pals. The following 3 pet supplements are what I give our dog Jaxson to help him feel better. They have made a remarkable difference in his health, so I couldn’t wait to share them with you.
As Jaxson has gotten older, his joints, hair and tummy react differently. Adding in good, healthy supplements have allowed him to be his crazy and spunky self.
Glucosamine For Healthy Joints
Did you know that just like humans, dogs are suseptible to achy and stiff joints as they get older? They want to stay active and run around the dog park all day, but as each year passes, this may get harder on them.
That’s why glucosamine is a great supplement to be adding to their diets.
I recently read about a study done on arthritic dogs in Delicious Living. It said..
“In one well-designed study, scientists divided 20 arthritic dogs into four groups and treated them with supplements for four months. One group took 10 mg UC-II, a type of collagen. Another group took 2,000 mg glucosamine combined with 1,600 mg chondroitin. A third group took all three supplements, and the final group took a placebo. After each month, researchers tested dogs’ pain levels, which decreased regularly. All dogs, except those given a placebo, experienced improvements in overall pain, pain upon limb manipulation and exercise-associated lameness, but the dogs who took all three supplements showed the best results. Tellingly, the dogs’ pain returned 30 days after the supplements stopped.”
It’s Helped Jaxson Tremendously
A few years ago, Jaxson got all riled up about something in his yard. He was kicking his back legs so hard in the dirt that he pulled a muscle in his back hip. It was so bad that he couldn’t jump up on his favorite chair anymore and didn’t want to run around.
I was afraid he would have to have surgery, but thankfully, a friend told me about these Tag Arthopowder tablets from Vitacost (yes, another reason why I love Vitacost).
We started giving these to Jaxson every day and within two weeks he was back to running around. No more jumping, but definitely feeling better.
I’ve also have found when I run out… he starts to show signs of getting stiff joints again. So I am always making sure we are stocked up!
Omega 3 for Skin and Fur
If there was a definition for ‘scratchy dog’ in the dictionary, a picture of my dog would be there.
Jaxson has been a scratchy dog since he was a pup. We have never really been able to determine what was the cause of it, but I have recently found something that helps him.
Adding about a tablespoon of Barlean’s Flax Oil for Animals to his food (which he loves) has resulted in him itchy less and his fur looks a lot sleeker and nicer too.
Omega 3 oils are not only good for their skin and fur, but it is also said to help their joints to. So that’s a win, win on that one!
Probiotics – They Need Healthy Guts Too
OK. Let’s be honest here. If you have ever been in a room with a dog that does not have a happy, healthy gut, it can be quite the experience. It may even lead to people clearing out and looking for fresh air.
I know.. because I’ve been there….
Probiotics can be a big help with this ‘gassy’ situation.
There hasn’t been a lot of research done on the subject, but seeing that dogs are often led to eating things they shouldn’t, or stuff that grosses us out, giving them a good probiotic that is especially formulated for them isn’t such a bad idea.
I recently did some research on which one to try with Jaxson and decided to give these Dr. Mercola ones a try. There are quite a lot of positive reviews and they seem to be packed with a lot of good ingredients for his gut.
Happy Pup – Happy Owner
So there are 3 pet supplements that I am giving our four legged family member.
Jaxson has been in our family for about 14 years now and I wouldn’t have it any other way. He’s brought a lot of laughter and joy into this house, so spoiling him a little with some good pet supplements is the least we can do.
