When people find out that I’m a Certified Health Coach, one of the first things they say is “Oh, I so need you in my life!“. Now, although it’s very flattering to hear that, I know deep down they don’t really need me, they just need encouragement. They know what they should be doing, but they just aren’t doing it. So, that’s why I like walking them through my Simple Steps To A Healthier Lifestyle.
Making A Choice Is Step One
Back in August I started this series of Simple Steps to A Healthier Lifestyle. I had planned on writing the next step sooner, but some other blog commitments kept me from doing so and I had also been having quite a bit of fun coming up with some new recipes.
Since it’s been a little while, I thought I would share some quick snippets from my post
Choice is basically defined as having the power, option, or ability to look at a situation, a course of action, and to select among them.
Taking the step towards starting on a new journey towards a healthier lifestyle is a wonderful choice we get to have. It can be the one step we take that can make a huge impact.
If you are at the stage in your life when you are trying to decide whether you want to really make a firm choice to be healthy, make a list. Write out different results that could happen if you choose NOT to take the first step and then write out what the consequences of that choice would be. Next, write out different results that could happen if you chose to say YES and take that first step. Then write out what the consequences of that choice would be.
Making choices requires being able to use reasoning and thought. This all happens in the frontal lobe.
Your frontal lobe is where your decision making process happens. Seeing that this is an important part of your body, it’s a good idea to exercise it on a regular basis.
Here are a few exercises your frontal lobe are:
- List Making
- Brain games/puzzle
Now On To Step Two: Asking Yourself Some Questions
Once you have made the choice to start living a more healthier lifestyle, it’s a good idea to take some time and ask yourself a few KEY questions to help you figure out what direction your next few steps will take you.
These questions may seem a bit basic, but this exercise will help to get your mind thinking about things.
So many times we jump into a new diet or exercise program thinking it’s going to be magic program.
This one will work, I just know it!
If it worked for _______, then it should work for me right?
If it only worked that way… but it doesn’t.
We are all uniquely different, so our approach to living a healthier lifestyle needs to be just like us.. original.
The Basic, Yet Necessary Questions
When I first meet with a potential health coaching client, the first thing we do is go over a long list of questions. Although all the questions I ask are important, I have that these basic questions are the ‘Ah Ha‘ ones. These are the ones that get the best reactions, best answers, and really get the client envisioning themselves being able to do this.
Questions To Ask Yourself
- What are you main health concerns?
- Looking back, is there a time in your life where you felt your best?
- What were you doing at that time?
- Were you on any specific diet or exercise program?
- What is your family health history?
- Have family members struggled with health and or weight issues
- How is your sleep?
- How much sleep do you get at night?
- What do you think is the most important thing you need to do to improve your health?
Don’t Rush It – Take Your Time
As you’re going through this questions, take your time and really think through them. The simplest details can turn a light on to something that may have been hidden in your past health journeys. Thinking about when you felt your best last or what struggles your family has had, may just be the break you need.
Once you have gone through your questions, share them with a close a friend. Having someone that can walk alond side you through this journey can make a huge difference.
